Infectious Diseases, Vaccinations, Responsibility, and Irresponsibility (전염병, 백신, 책임과 무책임)A single person contracted an infectious disease in Switzerland sometime during the week before January 15th. Within 10 days, new casesof the disease had been identified in San DIego. Less than two weekslater, the disease was known to have spread to Honolulu. People exposed to the disease are known to have attended a performance of Cirque du Soleil and a major sporting event.This isn’t a Tom Clancy novel or a Homeland Security exercise, and the illness in question isn’t some obscure new infectious disease. It’s measles.1월 15일경 스위스에서 어떤 사람이 전염병에 감염되었다. 그리고 열흘만에 같은 병에 감염된 사례가 샌디에고에서 발견되었다. 그로부터 2주가 채 되지않아서 이 병은 호놀룰루로 퍼져나갔다. 게다가 이 병에 감염된 사람들이 Cirque du Soleil이라는 굉장히 큰 공연을 구경하러 갔다고 한다. - 이 얘기는 탐 클랜시의 소설이나 홈랜드 시큐리티의 훈련상황이 아니다. 무시무시한 속도로 퍼져나간 이 전염병은 원인을 모르는 새로운 질병이 아니다. 바로 ‘홍역’이었다.

얼마전 종종 들르는 블로그에서 윗글을 보고 관련된 글을 한번 써볼까 하고 생각했었는데 마침 요즘 한국에서도 이와 비슷한 백신거부 운동(?) 같은게 시작되고 있는 모양인지 리더기에서 백신 관련글이 종종 떠오른다.요즘 한국 애기엄마들 사이에서는 웰빙바람(?)때문인지 모든걸 - 분만부터 수유, 기저귀, 이유식 이제는 백신까지-자연 그대로 받아들이고 인위적인걸 거부하는 바람이 불고 있는듯 하다. 첨단의학과 과학기술, 현대화된 편의시설을 거부하고 분만,수유,면기저귀,유기농 이유식을 고집하는 것 까지는 수긍할 수 있다고 치자. 하지만 같은 이유로 백신을 거부하는 부모들을 보면 정말 그 무지함과 무책임에 화가 날 지경이다.백신이 무엇인지 왜 필요한지에 대한 얘기는 하고 싶지 않다. 그건 정상적인 중등교육을 받은 사람이라면 당연히 알고 있어야 하는 지식이니까. 문제는 자신의 무지때문에 백신을 거부함으로해서 자기 자식뿐만 아니라 얼마나 수많은 다른 귀한 아이들을 위험에 빠뜨리고 있는지 조차도 모르는 그 이기주의와 무책임함이다. 다시한번 위에서 인용했던 글의 일부를 아래 인용한다.

The person who contracted measles in Switzerland is an unvaccinated7-year old. That person spread the disease to two (also unvaccinated)siblings. Between them, they managed to infect two other (unvaccinated)students who attend school with them. When the parents took the first patient tothe doctor, four other children who were waiting at the office wereexposed to, and contracted, measles. When they returned to the sameoffice, they exposed a total of sixty other people (although it’s notyet clear how many of them may have actually contracted the disease).스위스에서 홍역에 감염된 사람은 백신을 맞지않은 일곱살자리였다. 이 아이는 역시 백신을 맞지않은 자신의 두 형제에게 홍역을 옮겼다. 그리고 이 아이들이 학교에 다니면서 또 다른 백신을 맞지않은 친구들을 감염시켰다. 홍역에 감염된 아이를 의사에게 보이기위해 병원에 갔다가 차례를 기다리던 다른 네명의 아이를 감염시켰다. 이 아이들이 또 치료를 받기위해 병원을 재차 방문하면서 총 60명이 홍역에 노출되었다.One of the children who was initially exposed at the doctor’soffice flew to Honolulu during a period when he or she was contagious,potentially exposing up to 250 more people on the airplane and anunknown number of people who were at the gate area of the airportduring the three hours that the family was waiting for their flight.Another of the children exposed at the doctor is a 10-month old.Apparently, the parents of both of these children are big believers inthe benefits of early childhood development, because a day care centerand a swim school have had to temporarily close their programs forchildren under one year old.병원 진료실에서 감염된 아이중의 하나가 비행기를 타고 호놀룰루를 방문하면서 비행기에 있던 250여명의 사람들과 공항게이트에 있던 수많은 사람들이 홍역에 노출되었다. 병원 진료실에서 감염된 아이중의 하나는 이제 겨우 10개월짜리 (아직 백신을 맞을만큼 자라지도 못한) 아기였다. 이 아이들 때문에 어린이 집 하나와 어린이 수영학교가 한살이하 어린이들에 대해 임시휴교령을 내려야했던걸 보면 이 부모들은 대단한 조기교육 열성파였던 모양이다.All of this brings us to the subject of responsibility.이 모든것은 결국 ‘책임감’이라는 문제로 귀결된다.This entire measles outbreak has a single cause: the decision that twoparents made to not vaccinate their children. I do not know why theymade that choice - it might have been because they’re afraid thatthere’s a link between measles and autism, it might be because theyhave religious objections, it might be for some reason comprehensibleonly to them - but that doesn’t really matter. The key here is thatthese parents decided that they would not vaccinate their children. Asa result of this decision, three of their children got sick.Unfortunately, the consequences of their bad decision did not stopthere.어떤 한 부모가 자신의 아이들에게 백신을 맞추지 않겠다는 결정을 내리는 바람에 이 사소한 결정은 엄청난 홍역의 대 확산을 불러왔다. 도대체 왜 그들이 그런 결정을 내렸는지는 정말 모를일이다. - 아마도 홍역과 자폐증이 상관관계가 있다는 얘길 들어서인지, 혹은 종교적인 믿음때문이었는지, 아니면 그들 나름의 이유가 있었는지도 모른다. - 그러나 그게 무슨 상관이란말인가. 가장 중요한 것은 이 부모들이 자신의 아이들에게 백신을 맞추지 않기로 결정했다는 것, 그리고 그 결정으로 인해 자기 자식들 셋 모두가 홍역을 앓게 되었고 재수없게도 그들의 어리석은 결단이 불러온 화는 거기서 끝나지 않았다는 점이다.

한 부모의 무지함이 수백명을 홍역 공포로 몰아간 예를 생생하게 보여주는 글이다. 전염병을 알았던 적이 있거나 백신을 맞은 성인들에게는 사실 홍역 같은 병은 큰 문제가 되지 않는다. 심하더라도 감기처럼 앓고 지나가면 그만이다. 문제는 아직 백신을 맞을만큼 자라지도 않은 영유아들, 면역체계가 약한 어린이나 노인들이다. 그들에게는 사소한 전염병도 생사를 위협할만큼 큰 병이 된다.현대의학과 현대의 과학기술은 맹목적으로 거부해야만 하는 ‘악’이 아니다. 오랜 시간을 거쳐 인간이 가장 편안하고 안전하게 생활할 수 있도록 꾸준히 발전되어 온 것들을 단지 ‘인위적’이고 ‘해로울 지도 모른다’는 막연한 생각으로 거부하는 사람들을 보면 참 안타깝다. 그것도 자기 자신과 자신의 귀한 아이의 건강이 걸려있는 문제를 인터넷에서 떠도는 pseudoscience에 의존해서 섣불리 결정하려는 사람들. 차라리 도서관에 가서 오래전 생물시간에 배웠던 교과서라도 한번더 읽어보고 다시 생각해보라고 해주고 싶은 심정이다.
